Collaborative online workshops

I love working with organisations, Artists and Makers from other disciplines and am excited to bring you this series of collaborative online workshops that combine bookbinding with a range of techniques, including – ecoprinting, sketching, writing, cyanotype and relief printing.

These workshops tend to be a combination of video tutorials and Zoom live sessions which invite you to meet the Artists, ask questions and get creative in the company of others. The live element of these workshops means that there are key dates for you to consider (highlighted in bold) – once the event date has passed these workshops will be taken down but may be repeated later in the year.

With these workshops, there is the option to purchase a materials/tool kit or source your own. International shipping is available. Most of the links below will take you to partner websites to book your place – these are websites/listings managed by the artist or organisation I am collaborating with.

If you are based in Scotland and in-person workshops are more your thing, see my In-person workshops page for details of upcoming solo and collaborative workshops in some inspiring venues across Scotland.

The Art of Journalling / 6-8pm on 20 November or self-paced workshop

This special workshop in collaboration with Writer and Artist Julie Galante combines bookbinding, journalling and creative writing. The kit includes everything you need to make an A5 refillable journal and the accompanying video tutorials share how to make your journal and explore different approaches to journalling, including prompts that will help you craft a journalling practice that works for you. Select the self-paced version or join us via Zoom on 20 September for a live journalling session.

Ecoprint, Dye & Stitch: a collaborative workshop / 10am – 1pm on 2 October, group sharing event on 21 October / self-paced version coming soon

A collaborative online workshop with Textile Artist Elisabeth Viguie-Culshaw, which combines our love of bookbinding and eco-printing.

This is a great opportunity to learn the magical (and scientific) process of printing leaves onto paper and fabric using natural tanin in the leaves as well as some other key ingredients, including iron and Sapan Wood, to give stunning results. Elisabeth will share her tried and tested techniques with you via a Zoom live session on 2 October, allowing you to create your own set of beautiful leaf prints!

Via a series of step-by-step videos I will then show you how to transform a number of your prints into unique and usable books, including a fold book, Japanese Stab sample book and Nature Journal with decorative exposed binding – a unique way to display your work and create one-of-a-kind books that make for great personal journals, Artists Books and gifts.

We will also host a group get together on 21 October where you can share your creations, ask questions and get inspired for your next make!

If you are based in the UK you can opt for a materials/tool kit which provides everything you need, and if further afield we will send you a comprehensive kit list of materials to source.

Autumn Art Journalling / 5, 12, 19, 16 October & 9 November

Join myself and Artist/Writer Julie Galante for a month long creative exploration of the changing season. Combining visual art, writing, crafting and bookbinding, this workshop will get you trying new things in a small, welcoming group.

Each week we’ll cover specific creative techniques and apply them to our investigations of the world around us. We’ll begin by binding simple sketchbooks and creating an origami folder to contain our experiments and field notes. Together we’ll work towards filling these with writing and images prompted by a series of creative assignments which will have you out exploring the natural and built environment (although many of them can also be completed from the comfort of home).

From here each participant will be encouraged to deepen their explorations in whatever direction interests them most – be it a series of written reflections, sketches, collages, photographs, mixed-media pieces, or a unique, personal combination of all these. Finally, we’ll look at ways to combine these elements into a number of Artists’ Books, marrying form and content.

This workshop includes five live sessions (via Zoom), video tutorials and ‘homework assignments’ to complete in between live sessions. There is also a supporting Facebook group to keep connected in between sessions.

Rainbow Junk Journal – a printing and bookbinding workshop

I’ve teamed up with fabulous Printmaker and Artist Lou Davis for this collaborative workshop that combines gel plate printing with bookbinding – a celebration of texture, colour and bookbinding that will result in an chunky A5 journal.

In our step-by-step video tutorials we’ll take you through how to make a gel plate from scratch and use it to create eye catching prints, before binding your work together with an exposed cross stitch. There’s lots more too it than that so do click on the link below for more info.

You can work your way through the video tutorials at your own pace and either source the tools/materials yourself or take advantage of our kit options which provide everything you need delivered straight to your door.

Join us for an optional Zoom sharing event in the summer  – date for this TBC – this will be an opportunity to ask questions, share your work and get inspired with fellow participants.

I will then take you through the process of making a hardback book with triple chain stitch and a bundle of single chain stitch notebooks with the option to incorporate your prints into the cover and/or inside pages.
